How much does each tour cost?
The tours are free of charge; however, participants are responsible for all personal expenses, including transportation costs and entrance fees, during the tour.
A minimum budget is listed for each tour; however, we strongly recommend you have extra cash (Japanese yen) with you to cover souvenirs, snacks, incidentals, etc. Many small businesses do not accept credit cards.
-
How long does the tour take?
The majority of the tours take between 3 and 4 hours. Please check the time listed in the description of each tour before booking, and check with our staff if you have any concerns.
-
Do I need a visa to join a tour?
Depending on your nationality you may need a visa to enter Japan, so if you are unsure we highly recommend you check with your local Japanese embassy. Information is also available from the Tokyo Immigration Bureau.
General information for transit passengers is available at Narita Airport’s Official Website.

When are the tour starting times?
Volunteer Guided Tours start between 9:00 – 12:00 Japan Time, and must finish by 2pm.
Guides are arranged for each tour in the order participants apply, and if we receive many applicants early on in the morning, it sometimes happens that no guides are available to lead a tour starting later in the morning. Nevertheless, we encourage you to stop by our counter at either Terminal 1 or 2 to inquire, even if you don’t have prior reservations!
-
I’d like to do a Self-Guided Tour. What are your hours?
Staff are available to give you information on any of the Self-Guided Tours from 9am to 5pm local time. Please come by the Narita Airport Transit & Stay Program counter at either Terminal 1 or 2 during those hours if you wish to go on a Self-Guided Tour.
-
I’m a wheelchair user. Can I still join a tour?
Please contact us. Some destinations on the tours are regrettably not wheelchair accessible, so please allow us to suggest a tour customized to your needs.
-
Can we bring a stroller or baby car on the tour?
We do not have strollers to lend out, but if you have your own you may bring it on the tour. Please note, however, that some tour routes have stairs or uneven surfaces and you may need to carry the stroller at these points.
-
I’ll be a solo traveler. May I join a tour alone?
Yes, you are very welcome! Please understand, however, that we may ask you to join a tour with other participants, and in that case we may not be able to arrange everything to match your first choice.
-
Can I join more than one tour in the day?
In order to be able to offer tours to as many travelers as possible we limit participation to one Volunteer Guided Tour per day, but visitors looking for a full-day experience may choose to combine a guided tour with a self-guided tour.
-
I’m Japanese. May I join a tour?
Tours with the Narita Airport Transit & Stay Program are for foreign nationals. If you are not a foreign national yourself but are accompanying someone who is, you may join a tour together. (In such a case, when booking a tour we ask that it be done by the foreign national.)
-
Where can I leave my luggage? I don’t want to carry it with me on the tour.
There are storage lockers at Narita Airport where you can store your luggage for 300–1,000 yen (depending on locker size). There are also several baggage storage services throughout the airport.
For a discount on baggage storage at GPA (located at Terminal 1 & 2 Arrivals Lobby), show your Narita Airport Transit & Stay Program sticker.
-
When should I book the tour?
We accept reservations up to 3 months before the date of the tour. We recommend you book the tour as soon as your travel plans are finalized.
-
How do I cancel my reservation?
After booking a tour with us you will get a Reservation ID. To cancel, please email worldskygate@nrttransit.com with your Reservation ID and tell us that you wish to cancel.
If you decide not to join the tour for any reason, please let us know! Our tour guides are all volunteers, and come to Narita Airport specifically to lead scheduled tours.
-
What do I do if my flight is delayed and I can’t arrive for my tour on time?
If you are more than 15 minutes late arriving to the tour, your reservation will be automatically cancelled. Thank you for your understanding.
-
Is it okay to leave the tour partway along or extend the tour time?
When participating in a Volunteer Guided Tour, we ask that you remain with the tour guide throughout the tour, until returning to Narita Airport. Not only does this help ensure your safe and timely return, it gives your guide a chance to show you their best omotenashi (Japanese hospitality).
Exceptions can be made for Tour 1, which takes place in the city of Narita. If your flight leaves after 5pm or does not leave that day, and you wish to have more time in Narita, you may optionally choose to continue exploring on your own past 2pm. If you choose to do so, be confident you can get back to the airport without a guide. Under no circumstances will Narita International Airport Corporation or Narita Airport Transit & Stay Program, including Volunteer Guides, be responsible for missed flights or accidents occurring either during or after a Volunteer Guided Tour.
Because our guides are all volunteers, we cannot offer extensions on the tours. Thank you for your understanding.
-
I’m staying at a hotel in the Narita area. Can I get picked up at my hotel, or meet up with the tour guide at Narita Station or another spot along the tour route?
Because tour participants must sign a waiver before joining a tour, we ask that you come to one of our reception counters at Terminal 1 or 2 of Narita Airport. There our staff will also brief you on the tour and can answer any questions you have before participating.
-
Should I go to the reception counter at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2?
In most cases you’ll want to visit the reception counter at the terminal used by your airline. There is no reception counter at Terminal 3, so if your airline uses Terminal 3 please take a shuttle or walk to Terminal 2 (the closest) or Terminal 1. If you have a connection with different arrival and departure terminals, it’s best to visit the reception counter at the terminal for your departing flight. If you don’t have a flight departure the day of your tour, feel free to visit either reception counter.
-
Are you closed any days?
Volunteer Guided Tours are unavailable December 29 to January 3 (Japan’s New Year holiday), but the Narita Airport Transit & Stay Program counters are still open at Terminal 1 & 2 and we would be happy to help you find a Self-Guided Tour to suit your interests.
-
What are your terms and conditions?
The fine print is listed at the bottom of each tour page. We ask that you read and agree to our Terms and Conditions before booking or joining a tour.
